Food For The Journey
Dear family and friends,
With the Feast of the Epiphany, the Church has just finished celebrating Christmas. With this feast we celebrate the coming of gentiles (that's us!) to worship the true king of the world.
Tradition has it that their journey took years to complete. They probably had quite an entourage. Not only did they bring valuable gifts, but they also had to provide for their own welfare along the way. At the very the least they brought provisions. They probably needed servants to take care of the needs of the people and the livestock, and probably soldiers to provide protection throughout the long journey.
With Christmas over, perhaps there is a feeling of vague disappointment, or perhaps a sigh of relief. Now we get down to the business of making it through each day. For us Catholics that means we also need food and help for our journey to God.
Every day the Catholic Church provides us with both food and companions. Real food and real companions to help us along our way. At Mass we are being fed the bread of life. At Mass we join not only with those present with us, and also with Catholics around the world, but also with all of the saints, and, of course the Trinity.
Jesus always takes care of us. He provided us with food and companions for our journey even after His ascension into Heaven.
Ours is a faith of hope in the everlasting love and goodness of God. Deacon Michael talks about the greatest gift that Jesus ever gave to us... after life, that is.
