What Are We Called To Do?
Dear family and friends,
"The most terrible poverty is loneliness, and the feeling of being unloved." St. Mother Teresa
For many years my husband and I invited extra people to eat with us at Thanksgiving and Christmas. It was always great fun and we loved serving people and having a full house. But with the quote from Mother Teresa in mind, I have to think that, with a very small thing, my son outdid all of our efforts at kindness.
When my middle son was at Texas A & M he was walking across campus and a stranger, a student, came up to him to thank him. The student said that he had been on his way to kill himself, and Nathan had smiled at him. A simple thing but something that saved the boy's life. He knew he wasn't invisible. He knew that he was worth a smile from a stranger. For him, that made living worth the trouble.
A smile, a listening ear, a kind word, a greeting or a wave, all of these are things we can always do, no matter what the place or the season.
Thanksgiving and Christmas are coming soon, and the Church will be beginning Advent next Sunday. Our thoughts turn to helping others, both in gratitude for blessings, and as an expression of love. We want to help the poor, especially those who needs are material, and we should do it.. God wants to fulfill our desires to be better people during this holiday season. This is a great time to grow in Love.
