Unintended Consequences
Dear family and friends,
There was a man who worked in Michael’s law office who was a wonderful employee. Not only was he dependable, intelligent, efficient and pleasant to work with, he was also happily married and had a stable personal life. And he is a convicted felon.
When he was a teenager, he thought it was a great idea to make deliveries for a drug dealer and pick up some cash. And he got picked up by the police. He was arrested, convicted, and spent time in the penitentiary.
Someone who has been convicted of dealing drugs is welcome almost nowhere, even by employers who make a point of giving felons a second chance. Without his present job, his life would be in danger of being worthless in the eyes of society.
Sadly, not even God will change the consequences of our actions, for better or for worse, but they do not have to destroy our lives.
Neither Michael nor I saw how our lives together would turn out when we decided to marry. I had told him that if he did not believe what the Catholic Church believed and taught, I did not want him to become a Catholic. At the time he didn't even admit to believing in God.
But, in time, he did believe and he did become a Catholic. Then he became a deacon and grew in love and fervor. Then he died. Now three medically verified miracles have been reported through his intercession. One was the sudden turn around of the condition of a man who had been crushed by a big rig and was bleeding out and on the point of death; not only did his bleeding stop, but afterward none of his internal organs showed signs of trauma. The second was the sudden total disappearance of cancer in a woman whose cancer had metastasized and spread throughout her body. And the third was the sudden change in the cancer of a man who had been given two weeks to live; all of this cancer suddenly became benign as was no longer a threat. All of the doctors said there was no medical explanation for any of these cases.
I certainly didn't expect that when I married him!
In this sermon Deacon Michael speaks with great passion about unintended consequences. In listening to this sermon, I can't help but be struck by how prophetic it is.
